H型鋼能夠使建筑結(jié)構(gòu)重量降低35%左右;又因其腿部內(nèi)外側(cè)呈平行狀,腿端部呈直角,拼裝組合成構(gòu)件效率很高,可節(jié)約焊接,鉚接工作量達(dá)20%左右。常用于要求承載能力大,截面穩(wěn)定性能好的大型橋梁、建筑等。H型鋼種類是比較多樣的,如HN456x216x16x19,代表腰高456mm,厚16mm,翼緣寬216mm,厚度19mm,但是這只是理論的數(shù)值,與實際數(shù)據(jù)會有些許偏差,亦稱為下差。H型鋼按照其翼緣的窄、中、寬辨別,分別用HW、HM、HN加上腹板尺寸和翼緣尺寸來表示。
